FIVE CHILDREN ARE
SPARED IN SMASHUP
~
Maquoketa, Ia. Jan. 2. – Special: Harvey Manning’s five children, who attend the Anderson School on the Ridge Road northwest of Maquoketa, escaped injury in a freak accident Monday, while going to school. The children have been driven to school all year in an old touring car, and as they rounded a curve near the Dudley McDonald farm Monday, the “wishbone” of the frame suddenly gave way and the car turned down a 25 foot bank headed straight for the Maquoketa River below. This curve has recently been changed slightly on the road, as the county road was rebuilt last summer, and a new fence had been built on the pasture below the road. The car went end over end, right down the bank through the new fence, and stopped, just at the edge of the river, for some reason known only to Providence. The youngsters scrambled from the wreckage, climbed the steep bank, and went on to school, a scratched nose on one little face, and a wretched wrist on another youngster being their only claim to damage. The car was dragged up the bank that afternoon, and though the top and the windshield were ruined, the youngsters went back home in the old car.
