J. C. Love, a farmer in section 26 in Blaine Township, was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, December 13, 1836, the youngest son of Alden and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Love, natives of North Carolina. The father was a dealer of flour, bacon and general merchandise, and also traded horses, mules, etc. His death occurred in his native State in 1871. His wife died one month previous. Mr. and Mrs. Love were the parents of five children: Nancy Jane, who resides with our subject; William J., who located in Greene County, Ohio, in 1874 where he followed farming until his death, June 9, 1891; Polly A., wife of H. C. Moore of Guilford county, North Carolina; and J. C., our subject. Grandfather Samuel Love was a native of North Carolina and of English descent. One of his sons was a soldier in the war of 1812 and one in the Mexican war. Grandfather Jeremiah Cunningham was born in Maryland, but moved to North Carolina when a boy, where he married Hannah Coats. They remained there until death. Mr. Cunningham was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, for which his widow afterward drew a pension.
J. C. Love was reared and educated in the district schools of his native county and attended the Oak Ridge academy in that county. He was engaged in teaching after school and was later conscripted in the Confederate service, working in Virginia and South and North Carolina. In 1877 he came to Ida County with two sisters and purchased 400 acres of land in section 26, Blaine township. He now owns 540 acres of land. In addition to farming he has a line of fine stock. He is associated with the Democratic party, has been President of the School Board, been Assessor of his township, and charter member of Arthur Coal & Lumber Co. He married Elizabeth L. Brown in 1862 in Guilford County, North Carolina. She was a native of that county. She was daughter of Barrett and Louisa (Barham) Brown, who spent their entire lives there. Grandfather Brown was a native of North Carolina but Grandfather Nathan Barham was born in England and came to North Carolina in early days. The subject and his wife have six children: John, formerly a merchant in Arthur and now a farmer; Emma, wife of D. G. Yorty, of Independence, Oregon; Lulu W., who died in 1891 and was wife of S. M. Arthur; William Allen, at home; Samuel, at home.
