OBITUARY
THOMAS.
Edward Thomas was born in North Wales, March 28, 1838, being the oldest son of Ioworth and Elizabeth Thomas. At the age of 12 he left home and t the age of 14 came to America. He first lived in Wisconsin, from which state in 1862 he enlisted as a soldier. August 17, 1862, he was sworn into active service in tne{sic} 28th Wis., Co. G at Wankesha. He belonged to the 13th Army Corps in the Division of the Gulf. He was wounded at Spanish Fort, Alabama, on August 23, 1865. He was discharged at Brownville, Texas, after a service of three years and four months. He saw vigorous service, enduring many hardships, twice being left as dead on the battlefield.
On November 9, 1866, he was united in marriage to Evelyn M. Davis, of Foreston, Iowa. They were married at Prairie du Chien, Wis. Almost two years ago, they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. To the union were born four sons, one of whom has preceded the father in death, Fred O., who died on Feb. 11, 1908. The living sons are William J., Edward J. and Clarence I.
For some time he engaged in farming. In 1886, he came to Cresco and entered the business of harness and saddlery at which business he continued for 30 years. About two years ago, on account of failing health, he retired from business. His health has steadily declined and three weeks ago he was taken with his fatal illness. He died on October 20, 1918, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 23 days.
Funeral services sere held at the Thomas home on Wednesday forenoon at 10 o’clock. By order of the Board of Health, the funeral was private. The services at the home were conducted by Rev. W. A. Bockoven, and at the grave the G. A. R. held their full ritual service, they and the W. R. C. attending in a body.
Thus the community loses one of its oldest and best citizens. A sturdy man, a true soldier of his country, a thrifty, energetic business man, a faithful citizen, he filled full the measure of the years, laying down the burden at the last in the hope of a better life.
