Golden Wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Darwin P. Shumway, in a very happy and appropriate manner, celebrated their golden wedding Monday afternoon, Nov. 18, at their pleasant home, 402 Fourth Ave. West, Cresco, Iowa. There were about thirty old neighbors and friends who assembled at the home to help celebrate the happy event. Quite a number were unable to attend owing to the muddy condition of the roads.
This happy young couple were married at Martinsburg, N. Y., in 1968 and the next year came to Iowa settling first eight miles east of Cresco. A year later they purchased a farm two miles northwest of Cresco which was their home for nearly forty years. Of recent years they have been living at their comfortable home in West Cresco where they have been taking life a little easier. From their appearance and actions, their fifty years journey has not told very heavily upon them. They are yet quite light hearted and gay, feeding their chickens, going to church and having a good time with their friends.
The celebration was a very happy event, The home was very appropriately decorated with gold colors, potted plants and cut flowers. About four o’clock, the Rev. E. G. Copeland read nearly a dozen letters from distant relatives and friends who were unable to be present but sent pleasant felicitations. Following the reading, he represented the assembled guests in a presentation speech during which he presented the bride and groom with a purse of gold as a memento of the occasion and a token of love and good wishes. There was quite an array of gold presents, many of which were from relatives and friends living at a distance.
Light refreshments were served by the daughter, Miss Mabel Shumway, who was assisted by the Misses Mildred and Leah Steinman. After another hour of reminiscences, jokes, fun and good wishes, the guests departed leaving the happy couple feeling that they were about twenty years of age.
