EARLY HENRY COUNTY NEWSPAPER QUOTED MARKETS, TOLD OF FLOOD

Here are some interesting quotations from an early Henry County newspaper, in fact are of the very earliest, “The Iowa Observer”. Quoting from that paper:

THE IOWA OBSERVER: Edited by A. McKinney and J.T. Morton, office northeast corner of the square. The undersigned having procured the services of the above named editors to publish at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, a newspaper of the above title, of which the first number will be issued about the first of November. It will be devoted to the support of Whig principles.
Nov. 2, 1850.

The great flood of 1851 was reported by Mr. Anderson of Lowell mills as being 19 feet above low water mark, state reports were that great damage had been done to the towns and farms along the rivers by washing away homes and destroying crops and stock, all of the water mills and dams were damaged.
