GOES IN UP TO ITS NECK IN MUD HOLE ON PROMINENT STREET

Good Material for Pitt-Johnson Mud Road Crowd. Hoffman’s Dairy Delivery Was in Trouble.

A near tragedy occurred Tuesday afternoon at Madison and Hamline street, where a horse belonging to the Highland Dairy was nearly smothered in a mud hole.

The horse was attached to the dairy delivery wagon of Hoffman, the owner of the dairy. Mr. Hoffman, being sick, his two little girls were driving and delivering. In front of the residence of Mr. Paul Galer, the horse went into a deep mud hole, actually going down until only his forelegs and neck were above the water and mud. The children were half frantic, but got on dry land, and then efforts were made to rescue the horse. It finally took the combined efforts of the city marshal and the Dugdale dray line to pull the horse out of the hole. The horse was badly chilled and somewhat bruised in being pulled out of the mud.

It appears that the sanitary sewer was laid across the street last fall and owing to the recent heavy rains, the loose dirt settled badly, resulting in a deep hole. A number of horses and rigs have gotten into trouble there, but no efforts have been made to relieve the serious conditions. It is understood that the street has now been closed to traffic.

The milk wagon owned and driven by O.J. Hoffman of the Highland Dairy met with a mishap this morning when an automobile skidded and ran into the milk wagon. The car came out second best, a fender being badly bent while the milk wagon escaped without much injury. The accident occurred at the corner of Adams and Washington streets.
