One Eye Jack – Capt. Lot Abraham’s Civil War Horse
“A HORSE WITH A HISTORY”
Capt. Lot Abraham, one of the best citizens of Henry County and as gallant a soldier as ever wore the blue, owns a horse with a record of glory and patriotism. When the gallant Captain responded to the call for “more men”, in September 1861, by joining the 4th Iowa Cavalry, he came in possession of a horse that he had formerly owed and raised from a colt. The Captain served throughout the war and “Old Jack” or “One Eye”, the name given the horse in the army, was in the service during all that time.
Early in the service he lost an eye, and at Jones Lane the noble old charger was wounded in the stifle and his rider shot. At Bear Creek, he received a shot in the loins and he still carried the ball. “Old Jack” went the “rounds” and came out in August 1865. During all the time he was in active service and became a pet with all the soldiers. Capt. Abraham now rides this old war horse and if “Old Jack” could only tell the part played by him during the war, he could do it without dishonor. He is now getting old but is still frisky and full of fire. When “Old Jack” comes to die, he will surely go to horse heaven, wherever that is.
