Death of Mrs. Chas. E. Caruth
Death in terrible form came at eight o'clock Monday morning, March 25, to Mrs. Minnie Caruth, wife of Chas. E. Caruth, residing about seven miles north-east of town. Mrs. Caruth accidentally fell head first into a cistern containing about three feet of water, and probably rendered unconscious by the fall was drowned before the accident was discovered.
Just how the tragedy occurred is not known. Mr. Caruth had gone to the barn, and at 7:30 his wife began to make preparations to do some washing. Returning to the house, Mr. Caruth discovered the open cistern from which his wife had been drawing water, and at the bottom half submerged in water her lifeless form.
The body was removed from the cistern, and at two o'clock in the afternoon the coroner, Dr. W. W. Wyatt, of Kamrar, conducted an inquest, the coroner's jury rendering a verdict of accidental death from drowning.
Mrs. Caruth as a daughter of A. A. Bloom, who formerly resided north-east of town, and whose home is now at Beckwith, Minn.
She was twenty-six years of age at the time of her death, and had been married five years. She had no children.
The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Chas. Caruth home, conducted by Rev. Merrithew, of the Congregational church at Ellsworth, and the remains were laid at rest in the Lakin's Grove cemetery north of Ellsworth. The entire community was inexpressibly shocked at the news of the sudden and tragical death, and in his awful bereavement has the heart-felt sympathies of everyone.
