EMILY S. STAPLES LAKIN

Emily S. Staples Lakin was born in the state of Maine, January 21, 1837, and died December 4th, 1918, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 13 days.

She was untied in marriage with Luther Lakin at DeKalb, Illinois, on November 26, 1854. They settled at Lakin's Grove June 6th, 1855. Mrs. Lakin was the first white woman in this community. Mr. and Mrs. Lakin had 16 children, 8 boys and 8 girls. Three of the children preceded the mother in death, as did the husband, who died April 28, 1906 at the age of 76 years.

After her husband's death Mrs. Lakin continued to manage the farm, never desiring to move away from the old homestead. Since March 10 1918, she had been bedfast, all that time being cared for by a faithful nurse.

The funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon, December 6th at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. M. Norstad.
