STANHOPE PIONEER DIED IN WEBSTER CITY

Mrs. A. T. Smith, 75, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. Lyle in Webster City Saturday. She had been an invalid the past ten years, but suffered a stroke nine days ago that proved fatal.

Carrie M. Kent was born near Stanhope May 4, 1866, her parents being George and Margaret Kent, pioneers of Stanhope community.

She joined the Christian church when a young woman. She was married to A. T. Smith by the late Rev. L. N. Call, April 5, 1888, at Stanhope, and for many years they farmed near there, but had lived in Webster City the past 20 years.

Her husband died June 4, 1940. A daughter, Mrs. T. H. Coats, died in 1918. She leaves four children: Mrs. L. Lyle of Webster City; Earl Smith of Lake Crystal, Minn.; Millard Smith of Des Moines and Mrs. Harold Garth of Clear Lake.

She also leaves 16 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. W. R. East, Mrs. U. S. G. Kent, Mrs. J. Cottington, George F. Kent, Jackson Kent and Mrs. L. Q. Dick, all of Stanhope, and Mrs. Frank Bertels of Webster City.

Her death was the first in the family of her sisters and brothers. She was widely known in the county where she had been a life-long resident. Much of her girlhood was spent riding horseback over the prairies and she had watched the county develop from the first small pioneer settlements.
