OBITUARIES
MRS. PHILLOPS LAID TO REST IN MAMRELUND
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Martin Phillops in the Bethel church here on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 7, with a large congregation of relatives and friends assembled to pay their last respects to a well beloved woman. Rev. Paulsrud, so long her pastor, officiated, and the Okland sisters sang two appropriate hymns.
The pallbearers were: Ransom Holland, Guy Wicks, Sam Stevenson, Hal Swenson, Robert Baughman and Warren Laneville. Interment was at the Mamrelund cemetery. Gifts amounting to $31,97 were given to missions in her memory.
Rev. Paulsrud read the following obituary at the funeral:
Mrs. Martin Phillops daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Erick Peterson, was born on the old Peterson homestead one mile north of Story City, June 14, 1871, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Laneville, Webster City, on Feb. 4, 1940, at the age of 68 years. In her home and in her church, the St. Petri, she received a good Christian training that fitted her for the work in the church in later years.
Feb. 6, 1890 she was united in marriage to Martin Phillops. The young couple settled on the old homestead of Canute Phillops, where they lived until they moved to Story City the first of March, 1919.
The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Phillops; Mrs. Julia Vangness, Skyberg, Minn.; Clarence of Faribault, Minn.; Jennie Laneville, Webster City; Myrtle Hove, Stanhope; Joseph of Des Moines and Harvey and Ruth; the two last have preceded her in death, as also her husband, who passed away on March 26, 1936. She leaves 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Also two brothers, Erick Peterson, Stanhope and Peter Peterson, Chugwater, Wyo., and the following sisters Mrs. O. H. Holland and Mrs. S. H. Holland, both of Story City; Mrs. Wicks of Roland; Mrs. Caroline Nordskog of Beverly Hills, California, and Marguerite Peterson of Los Angeles, Calif., and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mathilda Peterson of Lake City, Minn.
Mrs. Phillops was a loving wife and mother. She kept a good and hospitable home. She was very much devoted to her family and they all had her blessing. In the church she took and filled her place. While a member of the Randall congregation, she took active part in the work of the church, especially in the mission work, and the same was the case after she joined Bethel church in Story City. We thank her heartily for the work she did for her master in his church. When I saw her the day before she passed away she expressed the wish that she soon may be permitted to join the triumphant church above. Her wish was granted very quickly.
Those from a distance who attended Mrs. P. M. Phillops funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Vangness, Skyberg, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Phillops, Faribault, Minn.; Mrs. Gerhard Peterson, Lake City, Minn.; Mrs. George Burkey, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Bryant, Mrs. Clint Burkey and Mrs. Wm. Buche, all of Slater; Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Hove, Boone; Mrs. C. Williams, Stratford; Mr. and Mrs. Wier Ritland, Huxley; Mr. and Mrs. Marquis Madison, Goldfield; Mrs. Emil Ernest, Goldfield, Mrs. Gottfred Ernst, of Dakota City, Iowa.
