Solomon Thompson Died in Minnesota

Well Known Hamilton County Man Succumbed to Pneumonia Friday while Returning from Yellowstone Park.

The community was saddened by the unexpected death of Solomon Thompson, of northeast of Ellsworth, last Friday. The Thompson family had been on a sight-seeing trip to Yellowstone park and was on their way home. They had reached Elmore, Minn., and were visiting relatives there when he took sick with pneumonia.

Nearly all of his closest relatives live at or near Elmore. He was very ill, but was on the way to recovery when Friday noon he suffered a heart attack and passed away about 4 p.m.

Mrs. Thompson and three daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Osmund Mortvedt, the latter of Elmore returned with the remains Saturday evening. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday at 1 o'clock and 1:30 at the Salem Lutheran church, southwest of Radcliffe.

Obituary

(The following obituary has been kindly written for the Herald by L. J. Tjernagel, a lifelong friend of the deceased.)

Solomon Thompson was born Feb. 25th, 1883, on the farm north of Randall where Augustine Hanson now resides. His parents were Helge Thompson Tonge and Anna, whose maiden name was Beroen.

He was married to Alma Mortvedt May 31, 1922. To this union one son, who died young, and three daughters were born. He was baptized and confirmed in the Randall church. In 1913 Helge Thompson and family moved to Elmore, Minn.

When Solomon got married he established a home on the Stone Mortvedt farm (his father-in-law's) where he lived for 12 years, and 3 or 4 years ago he bought a place two miles north and 1 mile east of Ellsworth, where the family now resides. It is beautiful home and shows good management and thrift.

He was an active member of the Salem congregation where the funeral was conducted by Rev. Naglestad, who spoke on 33rd verse of Matthew 6. He was interred in Greenwood cemetery beside his son.

Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his departure, three brothers and three sisters: Mrs. Margaret Hall of Clear Lake, Mrs. Lydia Madson and Mrs. Ruth Mortvedt of Elmore, Lars Thompson of Hendrick, Minn., Henry and Erick of Blue Earth, Minn., and a host of relatives and friends. Story City was well represented at the funeral; his cousins, the Hans Amlund children and Hans Beroen children. Daniel Johnson, a cousin of the deceased's mother, attended the funeral, tho feeble. The pall bearers were all nephews of the deceased.

Solomon Thompson was a quiet, unassuming man, fair in all his dealings with his fellowmen. He was a good neighbor, and one that it would be well for all of us if we could follow his example in that respect.

As evidence of the respect he and his family had in the community, the friends invited all who attended the funeral to come to the church parlors after interment for refreshments. This is a very nice idea, because we get the refreshments and a chance to visit with friends from a distance. All who knew Solomon will miss him, but what is our loss is his gain. Blessed be the memory of Solomon Thompson Tonge.
