Webster City, Iowa
Wednesday, September 26, 1888The death of John W. Funk, which event occurred on the morning of the 22nd inst., marks the final departure of another old settler and well-known citizen of Hamilton county, and adds one more to the unusual number of deaths of prominent people and pioneer settlers of Webster City and Hamilton county that have been chronicled in these columns during the present year.
John W. Funk came here thirty years ago, and regarded this as his home ever since, although for several years at a time he had been absent in other parts of the country. His last and longest absence from Webster City, we believe was prior to 1874, when he was in Missouri, Indian Territory and other parts of the southwest, pursuing his vocation as a school teacher. Since the summer of '74 he had been employed in bookkeeping - first with Miller, Shipp & Co., in the banking business; afterwards with the Crooked Creek R.R. Co.; in the county treasurer's office, and later in the Hamilton county National Bank, of which institution he was assistant cashier at the time of his death. He was a man of good morals, of the highest integrity and most exemplary habits; conscientious, honorable and scrupulously honest in every relation of life - faithful to every trust, and universally esteemed by all who knew him. He was in the truest sense "a good man."
John W. Funk was born in Chester county, Pa., in May, 1827, and died on the 22nd of September, in the 62nd year of his age. He was the oldest of the three brothers here, whom, with a sister (Mrs. Entriken) and two brothers in Pennsylvania and other relatives and near friends, are left to mourn his taking off. The immediate cause of his death was bronchial pneumonia although for some years he had been a sufferer from disease of the kidneys. His funeral took place from the residence of David Eyer, on Sunday afternoon, and was attended by one of the largest concourses of people that ever assembled on a similar occasion in our city. The services, which were very appropriate, were conducted by Rev. L. N. Call, assisted by the Rev. J.S. Norris. The pall-bearers were W.C. Willson, D.D. Chase, S.B. Rosenkrans, Cyrus Smith, B.S. and Frank R. Mason.
