Tuesday, January 5, 1999Clara Madsen, 92, a former Webster City resident, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999 at the Indian Hills Care Center in Council Bluffs. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Foster Funeral Home, with Rev. Keith Purscell officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Clara Layton, the daughter of Joseph and Amanda (Johnson) Layton, was born July 27, 1906 near Stratford. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1924 and taught in rural schools for two years.
On Dec. 15, 1926 she married Thomas Floyd Madsen at Webster City. The couple farmed near Stanhope, and also near Bells Mill and south of Webster City, before moving to a farm southeast of Blairsburg in 1956. They retired to Webster City in 1962. Mr. Madsen died on March 11, 1984.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Genevieve Madsen, Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, RoJean Madsen, San Francisco, Calif., Craig Madsen, Indianapolis, Ind., Martin Madsen, Mesa, Ariz., great-grandchildren, Amy Kenneth and Bethany Madsen, all of Indianapolis; a sister, Jennie Lehman, Webster City, a sister-in-law, Jeanette Layton, Story City and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Madsen in 1929, daughter Joan Madsen in 1930, and brothers Frank and Harold Layton.
Mrs. Madsen was a member of First Congregational U.C.C. in Webster City, past president of the Webster City Women's Club, Quill Club, Thimble Club, society editor for the Daily Freeman-Journal for 11 years, published the story of the first settlement in Hamilton County entitled "Hook's Point Echoes," was the first woman to serve on the Hamilton County Grand Jury, taught Young Married People's classes at the Stanhope Christian Church for several years and served as district chairman of the Lakota Girl Scout Council, receiving the Thanks Badge.
[her obituary was a little confusing and I was unable to find answers so I left it as is but great-grandchildren...Amy Kenneth and Bethany Madsen...I have no idea if Amy is married and Kenneth is her married name or if there should be a comma between Amy and Kenneth???]
