Richard Carl Schick (AKA PUP), age 84, under the care of Marshalltown Iowa River Hospice passed away December 18, 2016 at his residency at Arlington Place in Grundy Center.
Richard was born November 7, 1932 in Scranton, Iowa the son of Erna (Fischer) and Carl John Schick. He was a member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Reinbeck and the American Legion Post #242.
A memorial service with military rites will be held Thursday December 22, 2016 at Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Reinbeck Iowa at 10:30 AM with visitation an hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Troy Peperkorn will be officiating. The family invites you to a luncheon at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family.
Richard, a 1951 graduate of Reinbeck High school, spent 2 years at Drake University in Des Moines prior to his enlistment in the United States Air Force in February 1953. He served 29 years and 9 months as an aircraft maintenance manager and superintendent prior to his retirement as a Chief Master Sergeant on December 1, 1982. During his military career Richard received the following: Joint Service Commendation medal, Air Force commendation medal, Distinguished Presidential citation, Air Force outstanding unit award with valor; Good conduct medals, National Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam service medal, Air Force short tour ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award ribbon; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry cross and Republic of Vietnam campaign medal.
After retirement from the Air Force, Richard was an avid Hot Air Balloonist flying his “Pup’s Delight” balloon in Iowa until such time he moved to Arlington Place in Grundy Center.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Earl Schick; sister Darlene Schick Harting; nephews Lester Harting, Richard Harting, Steven Schick; nieces Suzanne Harting, Roxanne Harting Jones; brothers-in-law Larry Newton, Harlan Heikens and sister-in-law Joanne Schick. He is survived by his siblings: John Schick of Reinbeck, Pearl Heikens of Courtland, Virginia; Robert (Gladys) Schick of Plover, Wisconsin; Carl (Peg) Schick of Reinbeck; Henry Schick of Morrison; Joan (Jack) Fogt of Reinbeck; Jean Schick Newton of Grundy Center; Lavonne Schick Hougen of Grundy Center, Lois Schick of Lakewood, Colorado and Sister-in-law Mary Schick.
He is survived by 32 nephews and nieces and 52 great nephews and nieces as well as many great-great nephews and nieces. Richard was known to be soft spoken and a man of few words who loved children.
