Mrs. Shimer Died Thursday
Mrs. B. H. Shimer, a long time and highly respected resident of the Morrison community, passed away at her home last Thursday morning, Dec. 4, from complications of old age, and from a fall and hip fracture which she suffered two months ago. After some weeks in the Grundy County hospital, she had returned to her home where she was cared for by her family and neighbors.
Mrs. Shimer was born as Asenath Townsend, daughter of Thomas and Mary Townsend on Nov. 11, 1868, at Markdale, Ontario, Canada. She came to the United States in 1887 at the age of 19 and lived for three years with her sister, Mrs. James Black.
She was married on January 30, 1890, to B. H. (Bert) Shimer. The couple farmed for a number of years in the Morrison community and later retired to the Morrison village. To this union three children were born, Fern of Glendale, California, Mrs. Oma Cooper, at home, and Mrs. Russell Milbourne of San Francisco.
In 1890 Mrs. Shimer united by profession of faith in Christ, with the First Congregational church in Reinbeck where she became active as a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the church choir. Many old friends remember her rich, alto voice and her early church activities.
After moving to the Morrison community she joined the Presbyterian church and was an active and interested member until her death. Her good character and wholesome life will be remembered by all who knew her. As a mother and wife and friend, she brought many blessings to all where she went.
Mr. and Mrs. Shimer celebrated both their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries and enjoyed many happy family reunions.
Mrs. Shimer came from a large family of children, eight sisters and two brothers, all of whom have preceded her in death except one brother Jack of Douglas, Minn. Mourning her death are her husband, one son and two daughters. There are also six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a large number of relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Morrison Presbyterian church and were conducted by Rev. Christian Haupt, serving as supply pastor. Burial was in the Morrison cemetery south of the village.
With many beautiful floral offerings, appropriate songs were sung by Mrs. Elliott Koht and Mrs. Emil Nissen of Reinbeck with Mrs. Lester Bickett as accompanist. Mrs. Don Ishman and Mrs. Albert Goble were in charge of the flowers. The casket bearers were Robert Morrison, Harry Cooley, Don Ishman, Albert Goble, Everett Bowen and William Schmoranc.
The scripture meditation by the pastor for the service was based on the twenty-third psalm, and other appropriate texts. "The memory of the just ir blessed." "The righteous shall be held in everlasting remembrance."
