CARL W. SMITH SERVICE SATURDAY

Funeral services for Carl Wayne Smith, 50, were held at the Johnson Funeral Home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Mr. Smith, a prominent farmer in this vicinity for many years, died shortly after his car and a truck collided at the north edge of Hamburg about 12:10 a.m. Thursday.

The accident ocurred on the second curve immediately north of the North Station during a rain storm. Exactly how the the tragedy ocurred is not known. The two rear sets of tandem wheels of a Red Ball semi-trailer passed completely over the Smith machine from front to rear, crushing the left side of the car.

Gordon Anderson of Dunning, Nebr., farm laborer with Mr. Smith, received a broken leg and other injuries. He was hospitalized here, then removed to a Lincoln, Nebr. hospital.

Carl Wayne Smith, son of Granville Lee and Lillie May Smith, was born in Atchison County, Mo., on May 3, 1904. He was fatally injured on June 17, 1954.

On February 16, 1924, Carl was united in marriage to Mary Lylith Pauley. To this union two children were born, Madge Lee and Carl Wayne, Jr.

Carl spent his entire lifetime in and around Hamburg and was a graduate of Hamburg high school. In addition to his extensive farming, he has also been associated with the Otoe Food Products Company.

Carl was a member of the Hamburg Methodist Church, the Hamburg Kiwanis Club, the Waubonsie Saddle Club, and the Independant Order of Odd Fellows.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Smith, his wife Mary, two children, Madge Lee and Carl Wayne, Jr., one sister, Mrs. Vance Dooley of Hamburg, two brothers, Paul, of Winnetka, Ill., and Orvis of Wahoo, Nebr.

The memorial service was held on Saturday, June 19 at Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Fay H. McDonald officiating and assisted by Rev. Lowell Foster. Interment was in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
