The Spirit Lake, la., Beacon has the following in regard to the death of Charles Arthur, brother of Horatio Arthur, of Lowville, [New York], which occurred at his home in that place on July 27, [1902] aged 83 years, 4 months and 18 days.

His strength had been gradually failing, but he had no specific illness. He was active and in possession of all his faculties up to the last hour, dropping away without pain, in the presence of his wife and a few neighbors.

The deceased was born in Martinsburg, New York [on March 9, 1819]. In 1847 he married Miss Ann Allen, who is now chief mourner, after 55 years of rare companionship. To this union were born three children, one of whom died in early life. The survivors are Prof. Joseph Arthur, of Perdue University, LaFayette, Indiana, and Mrs. Florence M. Tradewell, of Lakefield, Minnesota. After living a short time in Illinois and Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur located at Charles City, Iowa, in 1857. Twenty-four years later in 1881, a home was made in this community

“He giveth his beloved sleep.” After the fitful fever [sic] we call life this brave, though modest, soldier of the cross laid down his arms triumphant to enter into the enjoyment of the fruits of victory incomparable. In his life was clearly exemplified the best elements of Christian character. For nearly half a century he was a helpful member of the Methodist church. During his residence of more than twenty years among our people there is not recalled a blemish upon his career, and through these years the sweetness of a kindly disposition, a broad and beautiful spirit, was uniformly manifest. Peace to the serene soul of this sainted patriarch.

Funeral services were held from the late residence of the deceased Tuesday afternoon, when Rev. E. G. Keith preached, and many sympathetic and appreciative neighbors gathered to pay a last tribute of respect. Burial was at Charles City, where in the old church Father Arthur did so much to establish, [sic] another service was conducted by the pastor.
