Belitha Griffith died Nov. 19, 1864 near Plumb Creek, NE. I found the news account of his death in the Burlington newspaper.
Burlington Daily Hawk Eye, Burlington, IA, Dec. 11, 1864, p. 3
Killed by the Indians.
Plumb Creek, Neb., Dec. 1, 1864Editor Hawk-Eye--Sir: On the 19th day of November, 1864, the Indians killed a man on the road between this point and Fort Kearney. As the stage passed west that eveining, they gave me the information. I sent out and brought the body in and had it burried. He was scalped. On his person was found a small memorandum book, with the following written of the fly-leaf: "Belitha Griffith, Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa."
If you will give this a place in your paper, it will probably be read by some of his friends.
