Betty Ann Schneider of Waukee, Iowa died June 24, 2012 at The Villages at Legacy Pointe after a short battle with a brain tumor. Per her wishes, she was cremated.
Betty was born April 7, 1937 near Worthington, Minnesota to Henry and Kunigunda (Miller) Basche. She was the youngest of eight children. She graduated from Worthington High School in 1955. She graduated from Worthington Community College in 1957. In 1959, she graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
She taught at an elementary school in Beloit, Wisconsin for one and a half years. She had to resign her position before students could see that she was pregnant. Other jobs in later years included babysitting in her home, tutoring at Grinnell Junior High, working for a dry cleaners, salesperson at a clothing store, working at the telephone company, substitute teacher, and working in the print shop at Grinnell College.
On June 26, 1960, she married Leroy Paul Schneider at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minnesota. She was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grinnell, Iowa and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waukee, Iowa. While at St. John’s she served as a Luther League Leader, a Sunday School teacher, various roles for Vacation Bible School, and was active in the Autumn Leaves group. While at Immanuel, she helped with Vacation Bible School.
Betty loved watching all activities in which the children and grandchildren participated. She enjoyed reading, traveling, jigsaw puzzles, word search puzzles, baking, crafts, and sewing.
Survivors included daughter Sue and her husband Rex Thompson and their children Christina and Ryan; son Keith and his wife Jil and their children Nicholas, Nathan, and Mikayla; son Rod and his wife Carrie and their children Jordyn, Trevor, and Kayla; and son Jerry and his wife Tammy and their children McHale, Tanner, and Cali. She was also survived by sisters Phyllis (Erwin) Brinkman, Violet (Vernon) Pfingsten, brother Donald (Marcia) Basche, and sister Rose Onken. She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers Harvey and Bob, sister Marion Kramer, and brothers-in-law Marvin Kramer and Lesley Onken.
Visitation was Monday July 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ernst Funeral Home in Waukee.
Celebration of Life Service was Tuesday, July 3 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waukee.
Burial and a short grave side service were Thursday, July 5.
