Elizabeth Joan Schaffer, 86, passed from this life on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at Assumption of the BVM Parish in Granger, Iowa, with burial at 2 p.m. at St. Vincent Cemetery in Riverside, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, October 26, 2012, with a 7:30 p.m. Vigil Service, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel.
Elizabeth was born on January 18, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Mello and Geneva (Shebek) Schnoebelen. She graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Riverside. Elizabeth married Raymon George Schaffer on October 22, 1946. She was a member of Assumption of the BVM Parish. Elizabeth was a honorary member of the 1st battalion, 3rd Marine regiment, 3rd Marine division association. She lived in the Des Moines area most of her life. She and Raymon enjoyed traveling and raising their ten children.
She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Rene Dooly of Granger; Gregory (Nancy) Schaffer of Adel; Daniel (Connie) Schaffer of West Des Moines; Ronald (Kathy) Schaffer of West Des Moines; Lawrence (Shelly) Schaffer of Madrid; Gerald (Debra) Schaffer of Madrid; Ricky (Danny) Schaffer of Ankeny; Rhonda (Michael) Golightly of Urbandale; Lisa (Gordon) Bowen of Columbus, OH; David (Stephanie) Schaffer of Madrid; brother, James (Martha) Schnoebelen of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Mary Lois Schnoebelen of Kalona; 29 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymon Schaffer; parents, Mello and Geneva Schnoebelen; brother, John Schnoebelen; daughter-in-law, Kathy Schaffer; granddaughter, Darcy Schaffer; and great grandson, Henry Snider.
