Gene Sapp, 82, passed Wednesday, October 24 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston surrounded by his family.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 27 at the West Des Moines Christian Church with Pastor Larry Squier of the Waukee Christian Church presiding. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday, October 26, at West Des Moines Christian Church where family will greet friends from 3 to 7:30 p.m.
Gene was born August 2, 1930 in Carroll, Iowa to Myrtle and Charles Sapp. He grew up in Scranton and Des Moines where he attended North High. In 1950 he met the love of his life, Alice Darlene (Anderson) Sapp and they married July 12, 1950.
October 7, 1949 Gene began his 36-year career with John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny. After retirement he enjoyed auditing John Deere dealerships with his wife and later became a driver for Dewey Ford for several years.
Gene served in the Korean War, earned a commendation pin and was a 40-year member of the American Legion. He served on the Norwalk School Board for nine years, six as president.
He was also an Elder of the Waukee Christian Church.
Gene is survived by his sons; Steve (Linda), Dave (Angie), daughters; Cathy (Bob) Phillips and Linda (Doug) McGrew, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents, wife, brother Kenneth and a great-grandson Paxton Sapp.
