Marabel Manders, 95, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2012, at Spurgeon Manor Care Center in Dallas Center. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6 at Brandt Funeral Home in Dallas Center. A private family burial will follow the service. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
Marabel was born on April 29, 1917, in Mount Vernon, IN, to John and Clara Cross. After graduating from high school in Evansville, IN, she met a young professional baseball player named Harold Manders, and they were married on September 14, 1939. Their son, Bob, was born two years later. In 1943, due to the war, Harold moved his family back to Adel, IA, to farm with his father, Roy Manders. Except for a short time when Harold returned to baseball, the Manders family continued to farm until the early 1980s, when they moved to Dallas Center.
Though Marabel was a homemaker all her life, she was also a farmer's wife—which she always said was the more difficult of the two jobs. In addition, she volunteered at the Adel Library and was an active member of T.T.T. and Questors. She had a life-long interest in reading and music. She loved to travel, especially to Scotland, the home of her ancestors.
Marabel is survived by her son, Bob and wife, Linda of West Des Moines; two grandsons; and five nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by many dear friends, both here and in Scotland. She was preceded in death by Harold, her beloved husband of 70 years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Spurgeon Manor at 1204 Linden Street in Dallas Center.
