Margaret J. Hargens, 80, of Arthur died of cancer Monday, March 29, 1999, at Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday 1 April 1999 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove with the Rev. John Schauer officiating. Burial was at the Hayes Township Cemetery south of Arthur.

Mrs. Hargens was born 2 Oct 1918 in Sac County in Iowa, the daughter of Neil and Alice (Smith) Currie. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1936. She attended Normal Training and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Grant Township. She married Emil Hargens Jr. on 27 November 1941 in Battle Creek, Iowa. The couple farmed in Grant and Hayes Township until 1982 when they moved into Arthur. He died in 1996.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was active in Arthur Senior Citizens, Arthur Community Club, Odebolt and Arthur Women's Clubs, the church circle and Hayes Jills. She assisted in the building of Arthur Community Center. She enjoyed crafts and community history.

Survivors include a son and his wife; Thomas and Beth of Waukee, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Anne and Todd Ohmart of Cumming, Iowa, and Jeanette and Keith Krommenhoek of Hutchinson, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Kristine Dobratz, Kelleen Krommenhoek, Allison, Emily, Meagan and Brandon Hargens and Matthew and Lindsay Ohmart; a sister, Mary Jean Hottman of Littleton, Colorado; four sisters-in-law, Olympia Currie of Odebolt, Lydia Hargens of Holstein, Iowa, and Frances and her husband, Don Barrett, and Hattie Hargens, all of Ida Grove; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Hargens of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho.
