Surname Change

GUSTAFSONCLAUSE

My ancestor Gustaf GUSTAFSON married Mary Olson in 1890 and shortly thereafter moved to Clinton County and settled in a Swedish community. He changed his surname to CLAUSE at some point between then and 1892 (he is listed as "Clause, Gust." in the 1892 Farmer's Directory for Clinton County under Elvira). How might I go about finding information on his name change?
