Kathy, Iowa began requiring the recording of vital records in 1880 but it was not strictly complied with 'til much much later. So I doubt if you will find a birth certificate. You may be alble to locate William's baptismal record, but it ain't gonna' be a cake walk. The 1870 census listing his birth as Sept of 1869 is probably the most accurate. The 1885 Ia. state census indicates he was the only child born in Clinton co. The 1925 Iowa state census for W.A. Donaldson indicate his parents, Peter Donaldson & Sophia Pewsey were married in Canada. W.A.'s religious affiliation is indicated only as protestant, but at least it probably eliminates looking for Catholic churches circa 1869 in Clinton twp, Clinton co. You might want to contact the local area gene & historical societies for their assistance for churches in the area at that time period. Most of the occupations on that 1870 page were sawmill workers so they may have lived in residences provided by the sawmill on surrounding properties of the mill. Dick
