The batismal record lists the child's name as Helen
Elizabeth Mc Devitt. Adopted by Charles and Gertrude
Wise. Born in Iowa City on August 9th, 1917. Baptized on April 26,1918 by the Rev. H.J.Albers'
the sponsors being Dan Burke Jr. and Mararet Burke
at Saint Mary's Church in Avoca,Iowa.ARTICLES OF ADOPTION;
Whereas'Baby Verda Marie Mc Devitt,born August 9 1917,at Iowa City, Iowa whose father is unknown and who has been abandoned by it's mother,Anna
Mc Devitt,whose address is at this time unknown,
and Whereas,said Verda Marie Mc Devitt is now a
resident of Pottawattamie County,Iowa and has been
residing for a number of years in the home of
Charles and Gertrude Wise, husband and wife of Avoca,Iowa,who are desirous of adopting said Baby
Verda Marie Mc Devitt as their own child; which
adoption is recommended and advised and is for the best interests of said child.
Now, therefore, know all men by these present, that I, O.D.Wheeler, one of the judges of the District Court of Iowa in and for Pottawattamie
County,Iowa, by virture of the authority vested
in me under Section 10497 of the Code of Iowa,
1924 do hereby consent and give unto the said
Charles and Gertrude Wise the said Baby Verda Marie Mc Devitt.
Filed January 13th,1925.My Grandmother,Gertrude Wise, married Bill Bollig
after Charles Wise died. She saved the obituary
clipping of William J. Mc Devitt of Clinton County
He was married to Mararet Dunlavy and had a brother named James who had several children.
William died in 1923 and was buried in Villa Nova
at St. Patrick's cemetary. We think this family may be related to Verda Marie,(Helen Wise).'
