DEATH OF PROF. OLIVER.
Former Decorian Dies at His Home in New Hampton.
Prof. Geo A. Oliver died suddenly of apoplexy at his home in New Hampton last Saturday, June 11th. Tuesday he was attacked with a slight nausea which soon passed away. A day or two later he complained of severe shooting pains in his forehead. These also passed off Friday night. Friday night he was tendered a surprise party at his home and he was the happiest person present. Saturday morning he arose feeling well and remarked to his wife of the pleasant dream he had about her but concluded that as the week’s work was done he would lie down for a few moments before going to town. After lying down he was attacked with nausea and soon lapsed into unconsciousness and passed away. Prof. Oliver was born in Scotland 56 years ago and came to this county about 1885. After teaching school in Hesper Township two years he became a teacher in the Valder college, which position he held for nine years and then became a partner. Four years he was with the management and then he went to Fayette and took the commercial course in the Upper Iowa university. Three years ago he went to New Hampton and took charge of the branch there of the Cedar Rapids commercial school and two years ago bought it out. He was a man of great nervous force and energy, an enthusiast in anything that claimed his attention. He was active in church work also, taking part in all branches of the Methodist church wherever he resided. That he had won a place in the hearts of the people of New Hampton was attested Tuesday, all the business places being closed during the funeral. He is survived by his wife and sons Vernon and Ralph.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1854 and is buried in the New Hampton Cemetery.
