Marcus – Mrs. Mathilda Billings was born in Dahlsland, Sweden, July 9, 1849.
She was united in marriage to George Billings August 2, 1874, who in 1910 preceded her in death. To their union were 10 children, 5 of whom are now living, namely Hulda of Marcus; George of Milaca, Minn., Ivar of Marcus, Cecelia (Mrs. John Soukup) of LeMars and Amelia (Mrs. Wm. Raetz) of Remsen, Iowa. In 1878, she came to Marcus, where she has resided ever since. She leaves to mourn her these, her children, 12 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, besides a host of friends. She died April 8, 1932, at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 28 days.
Funeral services were held from the Carmel Lutheran church Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. D.N. Anderson in charge. A mixed quartet, composed of Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson, Mrs. D. N. Anderson and Mr. Albin Johnson sang “Holy Spirit, Faithful Guide,” and “Fade, bade. Each Earthly joy.” Burial took place at the Marcus-Amherst cemetery.
The pallbearers were Jacob Roseen, Carl Strid, Oscar P. Johnson, Ernest Sjostrom, August Witt and Jep Juhl.
Those outside of our community attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Billings of Milaces, Minn., Mrs. W. Hedberg, Mrs. A. Nordenson, Mrs. A. Moline and her son Donald of Sioux City; Mrs. C. Stromwall and Mrs. A. Wall of St. Paul, Minn.: Mr. and Mrs. A. Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. George Anderson and their son Blake of Lake Benton, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sjostrom and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Roseen of Cherokee; Mr. and Mrs. Gust Roseen of Holstein, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bjork and Mrs. P. Nelson of Paullina; Mr. and Mrs. John Sanny, Mr. and Mrs. Chas Peters, Mr. and Mrs. Elward Sanny, Mr. Albert Lang and Mr. Walter Lang of Remsen.
