Mrs. E. B. Mahoney by Inez Keck
Margaret High, daughter of Oliver and Maria High, was born May 10, 1860, in Decatur, Mich., and died April 4, 1932, at her home in Cherokee, Iowa.
She was married Jan. 8, 1880, to E. B. Mahoney, who survives her death. She also leaves to mourn her passing, four children: Earl Mahoney, of Washta; Mrs. Pearle Thomson and Mrs. Hazel Brunk of Cherokee and Dr. Lloyd Mahoney of Clearfield, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild, and four brothers: D. W. High, E. M. High, Nelson High and James High. Two sisters preceded her in death.
Her girlhood days and the first years of her married life were spent on a farm near Decatur, Mich. She came to Iowa with her husband and two children in 1887 and lived on a farm near Washta for seven years. She then lived near Quimby, until 1910 when she moved to Cherokee which was her home until her death.
A happy occasion of recent years occurred in 1930 when Mrs. Mahoney and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Many relatives and old-time friends met and exchanged memories of the early days in Iowa, including the trip in covered wagons from the eastern states.
Although an invalid for the last 15 years, Mrs. Mahoney retained her unselfish thoughtfulness and consideration of the comfort of others until the very last. The respect and esteem of all who knew her was evidenced by the profusion of flowers that filled her room.
Funeral services were held in Appleyard and Boothby funeral home Thursday, April 7 and burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. Presbyterian church of Cherokee preached the sermon and pall bearers were Henry Stevens and Eugene Banister of Cherokee and Walter Simmons, John Allen, George Totman and W H Smith of Quimby. Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Mabel Mahnke and Mr. and Mrs. Beryl Mahoney, of Sioux City; Dr. Lloyd Mahoney, Clearfield, Henry Mahoney, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mahoney and family of Washta.
