Another Meriden Pioneer is Dead
Mrs. Ellen Gundry Passed Away in Cherokee; Funeral TodayIt becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of another pioneer resident of Meriden vicinity, she being the third to pass away within the past week. Friends are sorry to learn of the death at Cherokee Thursday of Mrs. Ellen Gundry, who is the mother of Mrs. Joe Johnson who lives two miles west of Meriden. Mrs. Gundry who was a pioneer resident of Liberty township, later lived in Meriden a number of years but for the past few years has been in Cherokee most of the time. The remains were brought to the Johnson home Friday where the funeral will be held Monday afternoon at two o’clock and interment made in Pleasant View cemetery, Meriden, beside her husband who died many years ago. OBITUARY
Ellen Olney Gundry was born at Mineral Point, Wis., August 31, 1846, and passed away January 5, 1928, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 5 days. Her parents were Washington and Mary Hooker Gundry. On Nov. 17, 1868, she was united in marriage to Warren Gundry at Mineral Point, Wis. They came to Iowa in 1871 and bought land in Sheridan township, later buying in Liberty township where Mr. Gundry died, July 15, 1887.
There were seven children born to this union: Mrs. W. H. Powell, Burbank, Calif.; Mary Elizabeth, died on July 15, 1887; Mrs. Jos. R. Johnston, Cleghorn; infant daughter, a twin of Mrs. Johnston, died June 17, 1875; Willard Warren Gundry, Fulda, Minn.; Mrs. A. E. Yarrington died August 5, 1909; and F. E. Gundry, of Seattle, Wash. Mrs. Gundry is survived by her children, fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren besides one brother, Lewis Olney, and a host of friends.
The deceased was a member of the Christian church for about a half century and held a membership in the Cherokee church at the time of her death. Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Johnston, west of Meriden, on Monday, Jan. 9. Burial was made at the Meriden cemetery.
