Gertrude Loretta Holmes, 86, Atlantic, passed away Wednesday, May 8th 2002, at the Griswold Care Center. The daughter of Albert Leroy and Mary Amanda (Pross) Wolfkill, Gertrude was born March 23, 1916 in Des Moines where she grew up and attended school. She was united in marriage to Leonard "Jack&" D. Holmes May 27, 1934 in Casey, Iowa.
Gertrude worked for Union Carbide in Red Oak from 1956 until she retired in 1975. They moved to Atlantic in 1979. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Ladies Circle and Golden Years. Her greatest enjoyment and fulfillment in life was her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other family members and friends.
She is survived by four sons, Leonard Holmes, Jr. of Atlantic, Lloyd Holmes and his wife, Jeanette, of Battle Creek, Lee Roy Holmes and his wife, Roberta, of Des Moines, and Lyle Holmes and his wife, Kim, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three daughters, Lavone Weirich and her husband, Ronald, of Lewis, Lois Figgins and her husband, Ed, and Loretta Olsen and her husband, Larry, all of Atlantic; one daughter in-law, Bea Holmes, of Ruthven, Iowa; 26 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Renfro of Atlantic; one sister-in-law, Helen Wolfkill, of Des Moines; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Larry Holmes; one grandson, David Figgins; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Allen Osborn and Kaeli Jo Holmes; one brother, Harold Wolfkill; and one brother-in-law, Lee Renfro.
Funeral Information: Services for Gertrude will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa, on Saturday, May 11, at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Allen D. Hellwege officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
