I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Information in brackets and notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
Jasper Schröder [Schroeder]
The bearer of this name was born on 28 February 1854 in Quarnstedt, Province of Schleswig-Holstein. He attended school in his home village, and after finishing school he took up farming and worked on his parents’ farm. In 1876, he was drafted as a soldier and served in the 31st Infantry Regiment, which was garrisoned in Altona. He was honorably discharged after two years of service. He then worked another four years for his parents, and then carried out his long-held plan to immigrate to the United States of North America. Upon arriving in this country, he settled first in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa. Mr. Schroeder worked there for six years on various farms, and then he took a trip to visit his old home in Schleswig-Holstein. He came back again after three months and purchased a 160-acre parcel of land, where he still lives today. The farm is equipped with good and solid buildings. On 9 March 1893, he married Miss Alwine Sievers, a virtuous young lady. This happy marriage produced three children, named: Johanna, Anna, and Ida.
