After a battle with cancer, William “Bill” D. Mitchell, 69, of Brandon, IA, died Sunday, September 1, 2024, at his home in Brandon, IA surrounded by his family.

Bill was born on March 21, 1955, in Vinton, IA, the son of Donald J. and Mildred “Millie” L. (Wright) Mitchell. He was raised on a farm east of Brandon, IA, until his family moved to La Porte City, where he was a 1973 graduate of the La Porte City High School. Bill was a talented football player in high school and went on to play football in college. He attended Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. He studied psychology and biology while attending classes.

On June 17, 1978, Bill married Janet M. Trumm, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Coggon, IA. They made their home together in Brandon. Bill farmed with his parents for many years, caring for the land like it was his own. In 1989, Bill and Jan built a home in rural Brandon, IA, and raised their three children there.

In 1989 Bill started working for the Mental Health Institute in Independence (MHI), IA. He loved the people he worked with and made many friends there. He also served as their AFSME Union Steward. He poured his heart into making sure the people he represented were treated fairly. Bill worked at MHI for twenty-seven years and he finally retired in 2016.

Bill also highly valued community service. He volunteered with the Brandon First Responders for many years. He started as a first responder in his early years of service and valued growing his knowledge and skills. He became a Farm Medic Instructor and went on to further his education and receive his EMT-B. He served as president of the Buchanan County EMS Association for several years. Bill spent countless hours organizing many soup suppers, and benefit pork loin dinners for the Brandon First Responders and to raise funds for equipment and training.

His family meant the world to him. Bill coached his daughters from t-ball, coach pitch, and softball teams. He was proud to become a “Papa” when his children started having children of their own.

He is survived by his mother, Millie Mitchell, La Porte City, IA, his wife, Janet Mitchell, Brandon, IA, his children, Lyndsey (Ryan) Anderson, Dysart, IA, Jill (Cory) Lange, La Porte City, IA, and Ryan (Kelly) Mitchell, Independence, IA, seven grandsons, Hunter and Carter Anderson, Caleb McGuffey, Taydom Lange, Easton, Cason, and Breckon Mitchell, two sisters, Connie (Larry) Wilken, Coralville, IA, and Jackie (David) Beyer, Eagan, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

Bill is preceded in death by his father, Donald Mitchell.

Visitation will be held from 2 PM until 6 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, September 9th, at the funeral home in Independence, Internment will be held at West View Cemetery in La Porte City, IA, at a later date.
