I just found out that my great-great grandfather, Bernard McBrearty, apparently died in Boonesboro, IA, around 1863. His family was living at that time in Centralia, PA, and his wife died there in the 1880s.
Bernard was born in County Donegal Ireland in 1801 and emigrated to the US in about 1850, settling in Centralia, PA where he and his sons worked as coalminers and mine engineers.
I was not aware until now that he had ever left PA. I know he was still in PA in 1856 since he had a son born there in that year. Could anyone tell me what was going on in Boone County in the early 1860s that may have drawn a coal miner in his late 50s?? Mines? Railroads?
Please feel free to contact me at rclements1@comcast.net with any information you would be willing to share. Thanks!
