Mrs. Plantz's Tragic Death.

Monday afternoon the community
was shocked by the announcement
that Mrs. George Plantz, living
a couple of miles north west of
town (Exira), had met death from a pistol
shot from her own hands.

The departed lived comfortably
with her husband on their farm,
surrounded with plenty and enjoying
the comforts of a good home.
She was a respected woman possessing
many qualities of worth. She
was married to Mr. Plantz about
fourteen years ago and has enjoyed
life and lived very comfortably.
She was a member of the Methodist
church in Exira and enjoyed the respect
and esteem of her friends and
acquaintances.

For a few weeks past she has
shown strong symptoms of being
mentally deranged and every possible
effort to delicately shield and
protect her has been made. For the
past week her condition has been
growing more critical and every
possible means for self destruction
was supposed to be beyond her
reach. Monday forenoon she was
about her home, as strong as usual.
Immediately after dinner, which
she had partaken of about as usual,
she said she was not feeling very
well and she would go lie down.
Instead of going to the front room,
as was supposed, she passed on up
stairs and in a few moments her
husband was attracted by the report
of a revolver and passing up
stairs found her kneeling by the
bedside, her body resting on and
against the bed with a bullet hole
passing in at the right temple.
Thus unsuspectedly and without
cause, in a supposed moment of
insanity, she fired the fatal shot
that caused her untimely death,
passing away immediately and
never knowing anyone.

County Coroner Ralph Hersman
was summoned who came and empaneled
a jury consisting of E. C
Wilson, George Huyck and D. E.
Shrauger who returned a verdict
that she met death at her own
hands.

The funeral sermon was conducted
from the home, Tuesday afternoon,
by Rev. J. E. Nichol, of the
Methodist church, of which she was
a member, assisted by Rev. Hartsough,
of Congregational church.
The remains were shipped on the
Tuesday evening train to Chicago
for burial, accompanied by Mr.
Plantz, where the departed will be
laid to rest beside her mother.
Death always brings its attendant
sorrows and the deep shadow of
gloom, but such a tragic death as
this calls forth the sympathy of
everyone.

Mr. Plantz is one of the pioneer
settlers here and the entire community
truly sympathizes with him,
and as far as possible will share the
burden of sorrow and sadness that
has befallen him.
