FORMER EXIRA MER-
CHANT KILLED

--------
John T. Lohner Met Death
Near Kirkman When
Train Hit Auto

--------

John Thorsen Lohner, deceased,
was born the 23d of June, 1872, at
Lohner in the district of Tordal,
Norway. Together with his cousin,
J. B. J. Lohner, of Exira, he
immigrated to this country the
year 1893 and located at Hamlin,
Iowa. Nine years later he married
Miss Sine Beck, daughter of Niels
Beck, Exira, who is now left to
mourn his early death.

Mr. Lohner is well known in this
community, where ha has spent
most of his time, having been engaged
in business here a number of
years, being once part owner of
the store now operated by Mr.
H. P. Petersen. From here he
went to Oakland, Iowa, and then
to Kirkman, Iowa, where he had
just engaged in the restaurant business,
when his career was cut
short by a serious accident early
Saturday morning; by being struck
by a fast Great Western train
when he was crossing the track
near his home in an automobile.
The train crew picked him up and
hurried him to a hospital at Council
Bluffs, where he died Sunday
morning, the 14th of August, 1921,
as a result of the accident.

Mr. Lohner was baptized in infancy
into the Lutheran church of
his native country, and was confirmed
in the faith in the year
1886. In this country he adhered
to that denomination, taking interest
in the erection of this
church, in which his remains were
viewed for the last time.

Those of his family left to mourn
his unexpected death are his wife,
their four children, John, Ethel,
Daniel and Minnie, ranging from
eighteen to twelve years in age;
two brothers, Thomas, at Wetonka,
South Dakota, and Harold, in
Norway; three sisters, Asber,
Signe and Anne, all in the homeland.
May our heartfelt sympathy
console their sorrow, and
above all, may the love of Christ
even through this very severe, affliction
bring them the comfort
that surpasses all!

Mr. Lohner was a loving husband
and a kind father, and his
sudden departure was a terrible
shock to the little family. To all
he was an honest friend and a
splendid companion and he will be
sadly missed. Peace be with his
dust!

Funeral services were conducted
Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock
at the Danish Lutheran church
here, with Rev. Jensen in charge.
Interment was made in the Exira
cemetery.
