udubon County Journal, 2-23-1905:

"Christian Reilander was born in Germany, January 12th, 1826 and died at his home two and one-half miles south of Exira, Friday, February 17th, 1905, aged 79 years, 1 month and 5 days."

"Mr. Reilander has been suffering for a long time with rheumatism and the ailments incident to old age, and on the day named death came suddenly. It is supposed that rheumatism of the heart was the immediate cause of his sudden ending of a life prolonged beyond the three score and ten years allotted to man. He served his king the necessary time in the army, which every able bodied citizen of Germany is obliged to do, besides carrying arms in the War of 1848. Soon after the close of this war, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Dubuque county, Iowa, where in 1865, he was married to Mrs. Anna Clemen, who still survives him. To this marriage eight children were born, six of whom are still living: Henry, Mrs. John P. Frost, Mrs. P.J. Kommes, and Miss Lizzie Reilander, of near Exira, Mrs. John Schmeidivig and Miss Maggie Reilander of Westphalia, Iowa; besides these, his step children, Mrs. Peter Theilen, of Templeton, Mrs. Michael Blum, of Westphalia, Peter Clemen, of Ipawich, South Dakota, still live to comfort and solace the aged mother in this her bereavement."

"In 1884 the family moved to Audubon County and have resided here ever since and have been eye witnesses to the many changes which have taken place in the last quarter of a century."

"Deceased was a quiet inoffensive man having no enemies and many friends, a good neighbor and provident man, looking well to the care of his family. He was a loving husband, a kind and indulgent father and a most loyal and consistent advocate of the principles advocated by the Holy Catholic church."

"A long procession of mourning relatives and sympathizing friends followed the remains to the Holy Trinity church in this city Tuesday where the pastor, Father Weiland, conducted the funeral rites, including Mass for the repose of the departed brother, when the funeral cortege once more formed in procession and wended their way to the Holy Trinity cemetery where the remains were deposited in their last resting place until the final awakening."
