From the Adams County Free Press, January 24, 1946:
"Sgt. Helen I Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Johnston of
Corning, received her discharge from the WAAC on December 8 at Camp Beale,
California, after suffering an attack of malaria. She is at present enjoying
a visit with here parents and friends here. Sgt. Johnston has spent the past
14-1/2 months serving in Dutch New Guinea and the Philippines, where she
was stationed at general headquarters of the Signal Intelligence Service
working with the Australians. She is entitled to wear the Asiatic Ribbon
with two battle stars; the WAAC Ribbon; the Good Conduct Ribbon and Medal;
the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star; American Theatre Ribbon; and
Victory Ribbon. She has a total of 53 points when discharged. She hopes to
remain in the same type of work in civilian life as she did while in the
army."A copy of the letter you noted is printed in the Adams County Free Press
dated July 5, 1945. It is addressed as "outside Manila." Being in the
Philippines, it doesn't seem possible that the Helen who died in France is
the one from Adams county, Iowa. The one buried in France was in the Army
Air Force and was from Michigan.
