William Hedrick (1833-1863)was born in KY, and settled in (what became)Oxford, Worth County, in 1860 with his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Standley) and 4 children. He was apprehended in Sidney, IA,in July 1863 by a posse of Worth County provost marshals, taken to Bedford, IA, and back into Worth County, just south of where the town of Athelstan was created after the Civil War. There, he was shot and buried in the presence of his 5 year old son, George W. The charge is not clear, but he was thought to be a bushwhacker and possibly 'sold more horses than he ever bought.' He may have been returning through Sidney after selling horses in Council Bluffs. Did he leave any traces in Adams County, perhaps a legal run in with the justice system?
