Rural School Notes

Normal training examinations will be given in the public schools of Postville, Waukon and Lansing, January 17, 18 and 19. During this time the office of the county superintendent will be closed for the purpose of conducting these examinations.

Allamakee county has been entered again in the State Spelling Contest. Procedure in conducting local contests will be virtually the same as that of previous years; that is, each town and parochial school will conduct its own elimination contest, and rural schools will have township contests under the direction of selected committees. All local contests are to be over by March 24. The county contest will be on the afternoon of April 7 at two o'clock in the Waukon Court House. State finals are April 28.

There are 207 eighth grade pupils in the rural schools in the county. These pupils will write eighth grade examinations in the subjects of spelling, hygiene, music, reading and geography on Friday, February 2. The examinations will be held in the public schools of Harpers Ferry, New Albin, Dorchester, Lansing, Postville, Waukon, Waterville and Luana. Pupils may select town most convenient.

Revised fair premium lists have been mailed out to all rural and town schools. School entries for the Allamakee County Fair of 1934 must conform to these lists. There are four divisions - rural school, graded school, high school and normal training. Premium money obtained from school exhibits is merited by the room or class furnishing the entry. It is spent for school equipment; it does not go to the individual.

Uniform county examinations will be held in the Court House on January 24, 25 and 26. They commence promptly at 8 o'clock.

The new state program in physical education will be presented to the grade teachers of the town schools on Saturday, January 18, commencing at 9 o'clock in the Waukon Court House. Mr. Karl Greenlee, president of the Iowa Physical Educational Association will explain the program, and Miss Catherine Patterson of Cresco will assist with the demonstration.
