1872 Harpers Ferry Independent
District In the afternoon the independent district of Harper's
Ferry was visited. W.P. Skinner, teacher; number of
scholars on roll, 68; present 33. I find this school very
neat and airy, containing patent desks of an excellent
pattern, some of which were occupied by children, many
others by a heavy coat of dust. Mr. Skinner is a young
teacher, being but 19 years of age, and while he is
evidently a well informed young man himself, yet his
scholars are scarcely up to the average, and I felt
somewhat disappointed, as I expected to find a larger and
better school at Harper's Ferry. But Mr. Skinner is not
to blame, for if the scholars would only attend he would
do his duty. Eddy Reynolds and Katie O'Brien answered
quite correctly and will make good scholars. No visitors
at this school and parents indifferent. Mr. S. keeps very
good order it should be said. |
