Former Central High Pupil Hurt in Italian Battle
Zane Shippy, 19, was wounded in action in Italy, November 13, according to a telegram received by his mother, Mrs. Emmet Cox, 3007 Melrose Avenue on December 3. Since that time further word has been received this described his condition as fair.
Shippy, a former Central High School football player, left school in his fifth semester when the National Guard was mobilized. A member of the guard since he was 15 years old, he was stationed at Camp Claiborne and later transferred to Fort Dix. In April, 1942, he sailed from his camp for London where he joined the Rangers and was transferred to Scotland for training.
He has participated in five major engagements including the raid on Dieppe, Dunkirque, battle of Tunisia and the invasion of Sicily.
His mother reported that his one ambition has been to get to Rome and Berlin and she added, “I hope he is soon able to be up and can join his group again to realize his goal.
