Sioux Cityan, 25, Rescued from Fiery Transport
Although he is only 25, Corporal E.J. Myers, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Myers, 1913 W. Third Street, has had eight years of military experience, has served with the second A.E.F. in Ireland and has been rescued from a burning $10,000,000 troop transport.
Corporal Myers, now attending army officers training school at Fort Eustis, Virginia, was returning from Ireland aboard the transport Wakefield, formerly the luxury liner Manhattan, when the vessel caught fire in midocean. Corporal Myers, with another Sioux Cityan, Staff Sergeant Clifford (“Kip’) Iwers, former Journal employee, were among those rescued from the flaming vessel.
All of Corporal Myers personal belongings were lost on the Wakefield.
Corporal Myers began his military career at the age of 16, when he enlisted in the national guard. He served two years with the organization, then enlisted for four years in the marine corps. He began service with the regular army early in 1941, and was sent to Ireland last January. He served there until being called to the United States for officers training a short time ago.
