Five Sons of Oto, Iowa, Farm Couple Serving Nation
Oto, Iowa –Special: Five sons of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. McGarry of Oto are serving their country, four in the army and one in the navy.
Pvt. Leo McGarry, 32, was graduated from St. Joseph’s High School at Anthon. He was a construction worker at Midway during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941 and also worked in Hawaii and Alaska. He entered the army in January, 1944 and is on antiaircraft duty with the Ninth army. Pvt. Leo is married and his wife lives at 3605 ½ Third Avenue, Sioux City.
Sgt. Bernard P McGarry, 24, was graduated from Central High School, Sioux City and was a Journal carrier at the time he entered the army air corps in January 1943. He returned from an air base in Cuba and is now stationed at Jackson air base, Jackson, Mississippi. He also is married and his wife and daughter live at 2610 Chicago Avenue, Sioux City.
Sgt. James J. McGarry, 22, was graduated from Anthon High school and entered the army air corps in September 1942. He is a member of the ground crew serving as an engineer for a B-17 Flying Fortress. He has just finished a year of duty with the 15th air force in Italy.
Pvt. George W. McGarry, 21, was graduated from Anthon High School and farmed near Anthon and Oto before he entered the army February 1945. He is in infantry training at Camp Roberts, California.
Thomas W. McGarry, 19, seaman second class, was graduated from Correctionville High School in May 1944, and entered the navy the same month. He received his boot training at the Great Lakes and Miami, Florida and is now in the south Pacific on an L.C. S. (L) boat.
Mr. and Mrs. McGarry has lived in Woodbury County 27 years farming in the Anthon and vicinities and now on a farm near Oto.
