John J. Martin Reported Dead

Parents Here Receive Word from Rear Admiral

John Joseph Martin, aviation machinists mate first class, “died of injuries received in an operational accident while in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country.”

The telegram, received Monday from Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs, chief of navy personnel, informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burt P. Martin, 2205 W. Second Street, that Martin was buried at sea with full military honors.  Further information was withheld at present.

Mr. and Mrs. Martin had not heard from their son for two months, but believed he was serving in the Pacific. He was home on leave last Christmas.

Born May 14, 1915, Martin was graduated from Trinity High School in 1935, and joined the Navy a year later. At the time of his death he was serving his second enlistment.

Surviving besides his parents are two sisters, Mrs. Paul Pendergast of Sioux City and Winnifred, a student at Clark College, Dubuque.
