Lt. Lowry was released from the navy in San Francisco December 24, after a service career which began July 23, 1920, when he enlisted at Omaha. He saw continuous service in the navy from the date of his original enlistment until early 1937 when he was placed on the reserve list as a chief radioman. He was recalled to active duty in August 1940 and promoted steadily until he reached the rank of lieutenant, senior grade.
In his first 16 years of service, Lt. Lowry served aboard gunboats on the Yangtze, River in China for about two years; participated in the fleet’s goodwill cruise to Australia and New Zealand and made cruises to Cuba and the east coast.
After he was recalled to the navy, he served aboard destroyers, tankers, aircraft carriers and cruisers. His last ship was the cruiser Flint, which he went aboard when it was commissioned at San Francisco in the summer of 1944.
Aboard the Flint, Lt. Lowry participated in several engagements in the western Pacific, around the Philippines, Indo-China and off the Chinese Coast.
After the Japanese surrender, he made several trips to Tokyo Bay, visiting Tokyo and atom-bombed Nagasaki.
While he was on the reserve list, Lt. Lowry was employed as a telegrapher by the Southern Pacific railroad out of Oakland, California and he will return to what work sometime this month.
He attended Central High School here before entering the navy.
