Dear Mr. Roelofs: Just a few lines to let you know how much I appreciate your sending of the Sioux Center News to me. I have been receiving your paper regularly. To me the receiving of a home town paper is another great item in keeping up the morale of a soldier. I like my work in the army quite well. As far as food and clothing is concerned I think I can say we are getting the best and plenty of it. I am looking forward to the next edition of the News. Pvt. Gary Koerselman is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Koerselman of Orange City. He was drafted last September 1942, and sent first to Le Moore, Calif., then transferred to Visalia where he is now stationed. He had a ten-day furlough at Christmas time. His wife and baby went to Visalia and are staying there with him. He is doing clerical work at present. His wife is the former Leona Oostenink of Hull. His address: Station Hospital B.F.S. 8th A.A. F.F. T.D., Visalia, Calif.

Promoted to PFC Gary Koerselman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Koerselman living northeast of Sioux Center, has just been promoted to Private First Class. He has been in the service a year, and will be coming home this week, leaving California on October 2nd for a 15-day furlough, his second since he entered the service.

It is nice to know that our friends haven’t forgotten about us even though we are so far apart. Leona, Gary Harlan and I are all getting along fine. We have been fortunate to be together for a number of months now. I’m still doing the same work, clerk in a flight surgeon’s office, which I like very much. A happy and prosperous New Year to you Ed. Dear Chuck: I wonder if you would print this small letter in your paper. Leona and I wish to extend our thanks to the many friends who sent holiday greetings. We sent a few cards, too, but missed a few of our friends which was not intentional. Leona, Gary Harlan and I are all in the best of health. We have been fortunate to be together for a number of months now. I’m still doing the same work, clerk in a flight surgeon’s office which I like very much. P.S. I meant to write this in the body of the letter. – I was glad to meet one of our home town boys – Earl Koele, who is a Cadet here. We have been seeing quite a little of each other. Meeting an acquaintance from your home town is an unusual coincidence in the Army. Earl had Christmas dinner with us.

Gary Koerselman, was born August 15, 1919, at Orange City, Iowa, and was residing at Hull, Iowa prior to entering the army on Sept. 1, 1942, at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He served with the Medical Detachment of the Air Corps and the 106th Infantry Division, left for overseas service on Feb. 19, 1945, returned on Oct. 1, 1945, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 8, 1945. His application for bonus pay was filed on June 1, 1949, for which he received $407.50.
