First Sgt. Hawley Gets Bronze Star: Awaits Shipment

For threading his way to the rear through exceptionally heavy enemy fire and returning to his unit with a radio which made communications possible, First Sgt. R.A. Hawley was awarded a bronze star, headquarters of the 78th infantry division has informed his wife who resides at 3818 Fifth Avenue.

A copy of the citation had been received by Mrs. Hawley which chronicles the action for which the medal was awarded. It records that it was given for “heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy March 11, 1945, in the vicinity of Linz, Germany."

Sgt. Hawley has been in service nearly five years, having been attached to the National Guard units from Sioux City that entered service prior to Pearl Harbor.

Besides the bronze star he has three battle stars for action in Belgian “Bulge”, the Rhine crossing and in central Germany. He was the fifth man of the First infantry group to cross the Rhine and also was in the action establishing the Ramegen bridgehead.

He has 102 point credits for discharge and informed Mrs. Hawley that at this time he is waiting for shipment to the States for his release.
