Sioux Cityan Wins Citation
Also Promoted While Seeing Action in the Solomons
S.S. Ellis, bailiff in district court for Judge D.C. Browning, Saturday received a message stating that his youngest son, Sergeant Bruce W. Ellis, now serving with the United States marines in the Solomon Islands, has been presented a citation for meritorious performance of duty on active service in the engagement against the Japanese.
Sergeant Ellis formerly was with the T.S. Martin Co. in Sioux City and joined the marines in April 1942. He has been somewhere in the Solomon Island group since last January.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis, whose home is in Sergeant Bluff, have three sons in the armed forces. The elder son, Capt. Robert Clark Ellis, has been overseas 14 months and took part in North African action. He was last heard from when he was in Sicily in September. Capt. Ellis was in the officer’s reserve when war was declared and was living in Portland, Ore. First Lieut. George Gordon Ellis, who formerly was assistant dean in the personnel department at Grinnell College, is now attending the adjutant general’s officer’s school at Fort Washington, Maryland.

George Gordon “Gordon” Ellis was born June 7, 1912 to S. S. and Gertrude Jessie Wallace Ellis. He died Sept. 9, 1989.
1st Lt. Ellis served with the U.S. Army in World War II.
